Night-Time Wanderings

Follow-up post of “How NOT to contemplate your life”.

We are all particles in an ever-expanding universe. I know what you’re thinking, I’ve heard this phrase before. Well, that’s not what I mean, so let me explain. First, the concept I’m trying to express is a lot simpler than whatever you think I meant. We are particles, as in we are comparatively small. The universe is expanding because a trillion years or so ago for some reason it thought it would be a clever idea to explode and create life -as Douglas Adams says: this made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

Yes, I know. You’re now thinking that what I just said is obvious and that it is exactly what you thought I meant. Is it though? I don’t think so. You see, we are very like the universe in some ways. My personal take on the Big Bang is that the condensed matter was just so very bored that it felt the need to do something. That is also what I think of ancient Greece and the invention of philosophy.

Think this through with me, just imagine this scenario. It’s a wonderful day, you’ve just gotten back from a nice slaughtering of some poor animal and you’re sure that the almighty gods are happy with the sacrifice and will allow you to continue living your peaceful life. Oh right, I forgot to mention this: you are of course a citizen of the poleis, not a stranger, slave, woman or pretty much 99,9% of the living population. So where was I? Right: you’re happy, blessed and nothing bothers you. The world is so beautiful and perfect and magnificent. But you get this strange feeling in your gut that you don’t understand. You worry about it, think you’re going to die, go slaughter some other animals and when you realize it still doesn’t pass decide that if you’re not dead and this feeling is still there, there must be a reason. At this point it has become your personal goal to reveal it and there you have it, philosophy is born. I know it seems like the whole bored universe thing and this have nothing to do with each other but in fact they are marvelously related.

That feeling you had, it was boredom, and it single-handedly created two whole worlds. The whole physical world with all its laws and impossible theorems… and that useless thing we like to call metaphysical world, but may as well be referred to as sand castles on a windy day. Now, you may be thinking that the last part of that sentence didn’t make sense, but again you are wrong. That’s the beauty of the metaphysical world, even the most utter nonsense can make sense. And from philosophy it invaded all other forms of thought that involved subjectivity (so were useless as far as progress and advancement and making human lives better goes).

A very troubled and depressed French guy brought the whole nonsense thing to a whole new level and invented this thing called correspondances which is just a fancy word for similarities. That though was the point of no return and for some reason everybody convinced themselves that everything must have an utter, deeper and more profound meaning.

And here you have it, we’re back at the beginning. This, my friend, is why you thought that the sentence we are all particles in an ever-expanding universe was some sort of reflection on how infinitely insignificant human life is. Well, I’m sorry to disappoint you because it’s not. Just deal with it. See, I just showed you how it all makes sense and how everything is connected.

Oh wow, I guess this was much deeper than I thought after all.
