How NOT to Read – Part 2 (reading lists)

I welcome you to part two of this post, if you haven’t already read the first go check it out!

What I want to discuss today is reading lists, the very reason why so many books I want to and am sincerely interested in reading remain forgotten and unread.

It all stems from the fact that both me and my mother are avid readers. This has three consequences:

  1. Someone is always recommending a book to read;
  2. When we go out together, it is very likely for at least one book to be bought;
  3. There are WAY too many books in our house.

Expanding on the last point, I really do mean a lot. There are piles of books everywhere: in the study, dining room, living room, bedrooms… everywhere you look there are books and they don’t all fit in the bookcases.

This is where reading lists come in. Given the sheer quantity of books, I obviously keep a reading list on what I want to read next and put the “next to read” books on a pile on my bedside table. A very tall almost toppling pile on which out of sheer laziness I also place all new books, waiting for a spot on the way too full shelves.

Obviously, this makes my pile of “next to read” books useless and to be honest, who doesn’t want to jump on the freshly bought book with its beautiful smell of fresh ink and paper. And, of course, this means that there are some books at the bottom of the pile which should be high up on my reading list but will probably never be read.

Even the ones in the middle have the only option of praying for an external intervention like the toppling over of the pile due to mere gravity, forcing me to rearrange, or the meddling of my pesky little kitten who loves to knock it down.

Hope you enjoyed and sorry it’s up late but I am #dysfunctional as usual and messed up the times!

Yours sincerely,

Dysfunctional Girl

  1. One can never have too many books, says a writer!
